Literature Text

I had noticed that recently Arthur seemed distracted by something, but when I asked him about it, he said it was nothing and continued with what he was doing, which was often gazing out the window, lost in his own little world. It made me sad, because I was starting to think he didn't trust me enough to tell me about his hopes, or worries even though we had been dating for almost a year and we had been living together for a month. I even began to suspect that he was cheating on me, but I couldn't have been further from the truth if I tried. In fact, I had no idea that I was in for a huge surprise
One sunny day, I was gazing out of the window, sighing deeply. Arthur had gone out and I was left all alone in the house. I sighed a little and looked up at the sky, wondering where on earth the man I love had gone to. He had promised to take me for a walk through the park later, but that was at least two hours ago. I sighed a little, and looked towards the woodland, which was almost right next to the house. Then, something caught my eye
"Is that what I think it is?" I muttered
I looked a little more carefully and I saw something I had wanted to see since I was a small girl – a Unicorn. I know it sounds really unrealistic and whatnot, but I would have said exactly the same thing if I didn't believe in fairies and all a manner of different creatures. Obviously, I was still slightly sceptical when I saw the white Unicorn go into the forest, but I couldn't resist. I had to know if they really existed or if I was finally going off my rocker like Arthur, who claimed he could see magical creatures when his friends told me he was just talking to thin air
"I have to know" I said
And with that, I left the house and walked into the woods, hoping that I wasn't going crazy. As I made my way through the dense woodland, I began to feel like I was being watched, and I had stepped into a Fantasy novel of some kind. Truth be told, I was a little scared because I thought someone was going to jump out and attack me, but Arthur always told me that nothing dangerous lived in those woods. Then again, that didn't stop me from feeling like I wanted to run away
Then, I heard a noise which sounded like a horse. I began to think that I had found just a bunch of wild horses, until I entered a clearing. I stopped in my tracks and gasped. Arthur was lying in the middle of the clearing, on a flower bed and he was fast asleep with a tiny baby Unicorn by his head. I couldn't believe what I was seeing at first … then I looked up and saw that the adult Unicorns were oblivious to my presence, until I ventured closer to Arthur. They seemed to panic, and their noise woke Arthur, who looked at me and just smiled
"Friends, don't worry. This is the love of my life, [Name]" He said with a smile
The Unicorns became calm, but watched me closely. Not surprisingly they were suspicious of me, but they seemed to trust Arthur completely. Arthur sat up and beckoned me over and I nervously approached, fully aware that the adult Unicorns were watching me like hawks
"It's ok, [Name]. They won't hurt you … Unicorns are shy creatures" He said with a comforting smile
I sat in front of him and he smiled at me as I gazed down at the baby Unicorn, which was barely a month old
"Sh-she's beautiful" I mumbled, smiling
"I'm surprised you can see her. Her mother died giving birth to her … the Unicorns have given me the task of guarding her" He said
"Oh … I h-had no idea" I mumbled, looking down
"These are the last Unicorns left in the world … and I have to keep them safe" He said
"Is that what's been troubling you?" I asked
"Yes … This small group is all that's left and I vowed to look after this little one as if it were my own kind" He replied
"I see" I said
To be honest, I felt a little sad that the baby Unicorn had lost her mother and I felt bad for thinking terrible things about Arthur when he was doing something to help a species that was dying out. I couldn't help but blush when I saw him look at me with that wonderful grin that sent shivers down my spine
"I want you to help me, [Name]" He said with a smile
My heart skipped a beat, just like when he asked me to live with him. I couldn't believe he was trusting me with this task
"What if anyone else comes and sees us?" I asked
"Relax, those who don't believe in magical creatures and such will only see them as ordinary horses, but still, I must ask you not to tell anyone about this place" He said
"I won't, you have my word" I said with a smile
Arthur smiled and looked at the Unicorns watching me and then back to me, which made me blush. Those emerald eyes of his always held my attention when he looked at me
"Thank you, [Name]. So, what do you want to call her?" He asked
I looked at the baby Unicorn and smiled
"Hope" I said, looking at Arthur
He smiled at me and kissed my cheek
"It's perfect" He said, hugging me
After that, Arthur and I went to the clearing together in order to look after Hope and the other Unicorns. Of course I stayed true to my word and never told another soul about the last Unicorns. It would forever remain our little secret …
